CARING FOR PEARLS

Pearls are organic gems and they requires specific care that will protect them for a very long time. They can be harmed by contact with many chemicals found in household cleaners, perfumes, cosmetics and hair care products of all kinds.

  • Never use toothbrushes, scouring pads or any type of abrasive material to clean your Pearls. Never use any “magic eraser” or other commercial cleaning pad, even those ‘safe for non-stick’ or otherwise presented as “gentle”.

  • Never clean your pearls with anything containing chlorine bleach, vinegar or ammonia (including Windex). All will harm pearls. Avoid anything other that water and soap (not detergent).
  • Never expose your Pearls to dish or laundry detergents, bleaches, powdered cleansers, or baking soda.

  • Never use any type of ultrasonic cleaner.

  • Never steam clean your Pearls.

  • Never use tarnish remover or any type of jewelry cleaner advertised on TV as a miracle cleaner.

  • Never store your pearls in any type of plastic bag. Plastic can emit a chemical that will cause the surface of the Pearl to deteriorate.

  • Never leave your pearls around a direct source of heat such as a fireplace mantle, on top of a television set, or stove.

  • Never store your Pearls in a very dry room or in a safe deposit box for a long time. Your Pearls need a little moisture like your skin so that they will not dry out!

CARING FOR GOLD

Gold will never tarnish or corrode. However, once it is being worn, it will start accumulating film of soap and natural skin oil.  Taking care of gold jewelries are important, so that its natural sparkle and beauty will be maintained.

General Caring for Gold:

  1. Make sure to remove your jewelry before you take a bath. Soap, shampoo and other body products that you apply in the shower will cause the gold to get dulled. Products that contain harmful chemicals are not good for gold jewelries.
  1. Handle your gold jewelry with care. They are as tender as gemstones and can bend out of shape once it is handled in a rough way.
  1. You can use soft cloths to buff your gold jewelry. But we recommend best to use chamois cloth. This will shine the gold without doing any cleaning methods.

Periodic Caring for Gold:

  1. Mix a few drops of dish washing liquid in a bowl (or if you prefer in a bucket) of warm water. Remember to check the temperature. It should not be too hot or it will cause damage to your jewelry.
  1. Dip your jewelry one at a time. NEVER pile all your jewelry in the container or it may scratch parts of the other jewelry and lose its luster.
  2. Wipe the gold gently with a very soft cloth to remove the dirt.
  1. Rinse your jewelry in clean running water until all the traces of the suds are gone.
  2. Then buff it gently with chamois cloth or soft cloth.

CARING FOR GEMSTONES

Gemstones are some of Mother Nature’s most precious treasures that are still being worn for centuries in different cultures. They can lose their shine even though some gemstones are very durable. Improper cleaning can cause permanent damages, but some simple ways can help you restore their natural beauty.

Do’s and Don’ts of Caring for Your Gemstones:

Do’s

  • Do use a soft flannel cloth or a chamois cloth.
  • Do use pressurized steam cleaners especially formulated for gemstones and jewelry.
  • Do take your time to inspect your diamonds before cleaning it to make sure there are no loose prongs. Once loose prongs are accidentally brushed or wiped it can cause pearls or gemstones to detach.
  • Do keep the gemstone jewelry in a separate compartment of a jewelry box or better in a separate fabric pouch.
  • Do put on your gemstone jewelry after applying cosmetics, perfume or hairspray.

Don’ts

  • Do not use harsh solvents or chemicals. Most stones are brittle and soft. Using harsh chemicals may cause permanent damage.
  • Do not apply body products with gemstones jewelry on. If you have a habit of putting lotion and other body products, remove your jewelries first. For it may cause the gemstones to get dulled and dirtied.
  • Do not boil your gemstones. Boiling your jewelry in a very hot water is not recommended way as a way of cleaning it. Many gemstones are sensitive to heat and they could be damaged easily by steam heating.
  • Do not wear your jewelries to the beach. Prolonged exposure to gemstones in direct sunlight can cause the gemstones to fade.
  • Do not wear your jewelry in swimming pool or in a hot tub. Exposure to chlorine can damage the jewelry metal and especially the gemstones.

CARING FOR DIAMONDS

It is important to keep your diamond clean so that it will maintain its natural beauty. During the course of ordinary wear, you might wonder why your diamond is getting dull or lifeless. Seems like it has lost its sparkle?

When the diamond is exposed to dirt, natural skin oils, perspiration, skin products, makeup or household chemicals (e.g. hairspray, chlorine etc.,) it will get the diamond to naturally get dulled because it has simply been exposed—or a dirty stone is probably the cause.

Here’s a 10-step method to make your diamond sparkly again:

  1. Fill a small bucket with a cup of lukewarm water—the water should not be too hot for your hands to touch.
  1. Pour a small amount of detergent into the water and mix well to get the water slightly soapy.
  1. Place your diamond into the bucket for ten minutes. This will give the sufficient time for the built-up dirt in your diamond to break down.
  1. Fill another small bucket with warm water and add an ammonia-based glass cleaner. NEVER use chlorine based cleaner because it may cause other jewelries to react.
  1. After ten minutes in the detergent bath, remove your jewelry and place it in the bucket with an ammonia-based glass cleaner.
  1. Remove the jewelry from the bath solution and brush it gently with soft bristle brush. Give extra scrub in places where most of the dirt built-up, to make sure everything iws getting cleaned.
  1. Get your jewelry and put it in the water and detergent solution, then wash the jewelry within the solution to wash off the dirt.
  1. Now, rinse your jewelry in clean running water. If you are rinsing in a sink basin, make sure to plug a strainer into the drain to avoid losing your precious diamond.
  1. Dry the jewelry with a lint-free cloth or soft cloth. Blow dry if necessary. Tip: Don’t air dry. Because it may leave stains on the diamond.
  1. Check if there has been any possible damage like loosening of prongs or other parts of the diamond.

Steps 3 and 4 are optional. We recommend those steps if your jewelry is really dirty.  Remember to make sure of the temperature of the water. Placing jewelries with gemstones in a hot water can shatter because of sudden temperature spike.

Diamonds are the most expensive and prized possession in our home. And we never want such possession to just get lifeless and dulled out. You can always follow these steps to get your diamonds sparkly and make it your regular cleaning routine.

CARING FOR GOLD FILLING

You can take care of gold filled jewelries in the same manner with how other jewelries are also being taken care of.

Gold doesn’t tarnish or get dirtied but when it does, it is because of the oil from your skin, the lotion that you use, makeup or other body products that you have applied. But don’t worry! There are lots of products out there that provide and promise you to clean gold.

But you can do it easily—and safer—if you keep it simple.

Here are 5 simple ways to take care of your Gold Filling:

  1. Simply wipe your gold with soft cloth carefully to keep it clean.

  1. If the polishing cloth cannot reach the places you want to be cleaned, take a small bow that will hold about a quart of water and line it with aluminum foil.

  1. Add hot water and a table spoon of Tide (or any type of washing powder that is available in your home) then stir it gently. (Don’t add washing liquid or bleach)

  1. Place your jewelry in the solution for about 1 minute. Then rinse with clean water and air dry.

  1. If the dirt is built-up in places that are hard to reach, put a little amount of dishwashing liquid in a bowl of water, and then soak it overnight.

Another way to simply clean your gold filled jewelry is to clean it regularly using a warm temperature water then use a soft cloth to dry and shine after. Chemicals marketed for cleaning jewelries can cause damages or color alteration to your jewelry. So the best way to avoid this is to keep it simple. Warm water and soft cloth are your best friends to maintain the sparkle and beauty of your jewelry.
